Nicaragua and Costa Rica Trip

2016 proved a successful and exciting summer for ten pupils and two staff from Fazakerley High School who took part in the schools third World Challenge expedition to Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The pupils aged 16-18 spent two years raising funds for the expedition, before finally leaving Fazakerley on the 22nd July 2016. The group spent a total of three weeks away with the first part spent in Nicaragua and the second part in Costa Rica.

Whilst away, the group lived in a local primary school in a village in Leon Nicaragua. The group helped teach the children English, build a playground, paint the school and embed themselves in the local community. They spent evenings eating meals with local families and it was a rewarding experience for the group. They learnt many new skills and bonded with the community. It was a culture shock having no showers and dealing with the obvious language barrier which the pupils broke down. However it was an experience the group will never forget. They learnt many invaluable life skills and they take away memories that will stay with them forever.

Our time in Nicaragua ended with a small day trek through a cloud forest in the Mombacho Reserve just outside the city of Granada. It took around 40 mins to drive up to the forest as the trek literally starts in the clouds. To finish the day off the group zip wired down to the bottom of the Reserve before heading back to Granada pack and end their stay in Nicaragua.

The 2nd part of the expedition took us across the border to Costa Rica. The group then travelled to San Jose taking in the local culture. The next phase was a challenging three day trek through the rainforest in Costa Rica. This proved to be gruelling journey that wasn t helped by the thunderstorms. The group pulled together as a team and completed the exercise. The end of the trip was spent with a relaxing four days based around the Manuel Antonio National Park with various animals and stunning beaches.

The expedition was a trip of a lifetime and the next one is Vietnam 2018!
